Former Defence Minister George Mpombo has been acquitted in a matter in which he allegedly failed to secure a firearm which his son allegedly used to kill his lover.
Principal resident magistrate O bbister Musukwa acquitted Mr. Mpombo in a 25-minute judgement stating that he was satisfied that the former defence Minister secured his Norinco 9.9 milimetre pistol.
Magistrate Musukwa also noted that the witnesses called to court gave contradictory evidence which did not prove that Mr. Mpombo failed to secure his firearm.
And reacting to the verdict, Mr. Mpombo says he is relieved and will now focus on his political ambitions of re-contesting in Kafulafuta constituency.
Meanwhile, family of late Ruth Phiri, the girlfriend to Mr. Mpombo’s son was angered by the judgement that was passed in favour of Mr. Mpombo.
