STATE CLINICS ISSUING EXPIRED ARVs TO HIV PATIENTS

Some people living with HIV in Lusaka are likely to develop complications to their immune system after being given expired Anti-retro viral drugs- ARVs.

The expired ARVs are said to be administered to HIV patients in some government clinics.

A medical officer at Lusaka’s Matero referral center has disclosed that the expired drugs which were distributed to the clinic late are being given to patients.

And Treatment Advocacy and Literacy Campaign-TALC- Country Director,Felix Mwanza, says he is aware that ARVs that were due to expire in April this year were distributed to clinics late.

Mr. Mwanza says patients given expired ARVs must report to his office or the ministry of health.

ARVs first appeared in the 1980s with the aim of stopping HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, from multiplying in the body. They do not kill HIV, but they do help to prevent the weakening of the immune system.
