Wildlife Related Offences Reduce In First Quarter Of 2016

The Ministry of Tourism and Arts has recorded a reduction in the number of wildlife related offences in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the last quarter of 2015.
The Department of National Parks and Wildlife has recorded 379 arrests compared to 624 in 2015.
Ministry of Tourism and Arts Public Relations Officer Sakabilo Kalembwe says there have been 315 convictions made in 2016 compared to 488 in 2015.
The department has also recorded 139 imprisonments in 2016 compared to 132 in the last quarter of 2015 with 157 offenders being fined as compared to 281 in the previous quarter.
Meanwhile, Mr Kalembwe says 162 kilogrammes of Ivory was confiscated in the first quarter of 2016 while 342.7 kilogrammes was recorded in the previous quarter.
He says 252 firearms had been confiscated compared to 274 in 2015 with over 1000 wire snares being confiscated as opposed to 2,158 in 2015.
