President Edgar Lungu has officially opened the First session of the 12th National Assembly with a pledge to focus on economic diversification as the country takes the path of economic recovery.
The President says his government will ensure to achieve a double digit DGP growth and a single digit inflation.
He says the mining sector has continued to play a key role in economic development hence government’s resolve to promote value addition to the sector.
He says government will also strengthen the monitoring of production and export of minerals.
President Lungu also says his government will also ensure a predictable micro-economic policy.
On the energy sector, the president says other sources of energy apart from Hydro will be embraced and that Zambia must lay foundation for flourishing renewable sector while the nuclear energy option will be explored.
And, President Lungu says violence should not be condoned in Zambia as it has no place in the nation which has always been a haven of peace.
Meanwhile, UPND Members of Parliament have boycotted the opening of Parliament, citing what they have called dictatorial tendencies under the Patriotic Front-PF Government.
The law makers say they will only be back in Parliament on Tuesday next week to start the Journey and the fight for the restoration of the people’s fundamental rights and freedoms.
