Bench Warrants Issued For Six Youths In Alleged Illegal Drilling Case

The Lusaka Magistrates court has issued bench warrants against the arrest of three youths indicted with UPND Vice President Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba in a matter where they stand charged for alleged unlawful drilling. When the matter came up for commencement of trial before Principal Resident Magistrate Mwaka Mikalile, the defense made an application that the matter be adjourned as six accused persons were not before the court. However, the state objected to the application by the defense saying it has become a trend for the youths to abscond court due to reasons unknown.
Allegations in count One and Two are that Mr Mwamba and 19 youths between February 13 and February 27, 2016 jointly and whilst acting together with others unknown allegedly assembled without the president’s permission to drill and to be trained to the use of arms or practice of military exercise, movements or evolutions. The matter comes up on November 4, 2016 for return of bench warrants and December 19, 2016 for commencement of trial.
