Farmers Fear Removal of Fuel Subsidies

The National Union for Small Scale Farmers of Zambia says the removal of fuel subsidies will have an adverse effect of maize production.
Union accountant Henry Mukuti says various farming inputs are likely to fetch at a much high price as fuel is a major driver of the sector.
Mr. Mukuti says while the decision to introduce subsidies is not in itself bad, it could have worked well if the removal of subsidies was on consumption and not the input side of production.
He adds that in line with this development, government must consider an attractive maize floor price next year that will reflect the true market value.
