Green Party President Peter Sinkamba says President Edgar Lungu’s Special Assistant for Press and Public Relations, Amos Chanda’s attacks and threats on the Judiciary are not only a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary but also contemptuous of principle of separation of powers by the Executive.
Mr Sinkamba says it is extremely disturbing and frightening to hear Mr Chanda issuing threats of purge on the Judiciary especially that an independent and efficient court system is a corner stone of the rule of law.
He says in a democratic state like Zambia, which is subject to the rule of law, none of the three powers of the state must act for their own narrow partisan interest but in the interests of the people .
Mr Sinkamba has since urged the Presidency to exercise maximum restraint and let the Judiciary remain independent to fulfill its role in relation to the other powers of the State, society in general, and the parties to litigations.
And the Foundation for Democratic Process- FODEP says it is deeply appalled by Mr. Chanda’s unjustifiable and unfortunate attacks on the judiciary and wonders whether such unwarranted attacks have the blessings of President Lungu.
Executive Director Mr. Chimfwembe Mweenge has since reminded Mr. Chanda on the provisions on the Republican Constitution in Articles 122 (2) which forbids a person holding a public office from interfering with performance of a judicial function by a judge or judicial officer.
