Operations at Konkola Copper Mines in Chililabombwe district have been grounded following a protest by employees.
The workers have protested against KCM’s continued ill-treatment of Zambian suppliers and contractors in preference to Indians.
They are also demanding salary increments to match with the prevailing economic conditions.
KCM has been embroiled in continuous protests even before Nchanga Underground Mine was put under care and maintenance, sending hundreds of workers onto the streets.
Recently, former Information Minister Chishimba Kambwili told Vedanta Resources to pack their bags and go for failing to pay workers and suppliers on time.
Meanwhile, the mining company has downplayed the protest with KCM Public Relations and Communications Manager Shapi Shachinda describing the protest as an illegal work stoppage.
Mr. Shachinda says the protest is in contravention of labour laws since wage negotiations are still underway between management and the unions and no dispute has been declared.
He says management has engaged the employees and their representatives urging them to return to work immediately.
But, National Energy Sector and Allied Workers Union General Secretary Manson Mutambo has described the happenings at KCM as shameful.
