Supreme Court Upholds 20 Year Jailing Of Police Officer for Defilement

The Supreme Court has upheld a 20 year Jail sentence slapped on a police officer for defilement.
Winfred Mapapayi was convicted by the Lusaka magistrate court for defiling a girl who was in police custody.
In upholding the sentence, Supreme Court Judge Elizabeth Muyovwe says the lower court was on firm grounds when it slapped a 20 year jail term.
She says it was not in dispute that officer Mapapayi took advantage of the detainee who was pregnant as the medical record showed that the victim was defiled on the material day despite her being pregnant.
Meanwhile, Supreme Court Judge Jane Kabuka has also upheld a 25 year jail sentence slapped on a police officer for murder.
Henry Chiwisa of Southern Province shot dead a lady who was selling baobab fruits after the deceased reminded the cop to pay a 15 kwacha debt.
But Justice Kabuka has refused to entertain the police officer’s grounds of appeal that he did not know what he was doing as he was intoxicated with alcohol.
Justice Kabuka says it was notorious for a police officer to be drunk and moving around with a fireman.
