Economist against proposal to ban imports of furniture

An economist says banning the importation of furniture into the country is not the best decision.
Jack Simutowe has instead called on government to ensure that local carpenters are supported through empowerment.
Mr. Simutowe says the local carpenters have the capacity to compete with international manufactures, if government empowers them with machinery.
Recently carpenters at Lusaka’s Buseko market called for a ban on furniture imports as a way to enhance the local furniture industry.
