Exempting Mines From Power Tariff Hike Weakness On Part Of GOVT-SARW

The Southern African Resource Watch has described the exemption of the mining sector in the recently announced tariff hike as a weakness on the part of government.
The Energy Regulation Board revealed that the mines are not included in the 75 percent tariff hike because the supply of electricity to the mines is governed by bilateral agreements between ZESCO and the individual mines.
But Organisation’s country coordinator Edward Lange argues that government should have been firm and negotiated a deal with the mining sector.
Mr. Lange also states that the tariff hike is sudden as it will impact negatively on Zambians who are already living below the poverty datum line.
