GBM Intervenes in Bemba Royal Establishment Chieftainship Wrangle

Defense Minister Geoffrey Mwamba on Friday held private talks with the Bemba royal establishment in their continued efforts to end the controversy surrounding the chieftaincy of Henry Kanyanta Sosala as senior chief Mwamba of the Bemba speaking people in Kasama whose recognition was withdrawn by government recently.

The three hour discussion held under closed doors in a local court building at Chitimukulu in Mungwi were attended by several Bemba traditionalists including chiefs chikwanda, luchembe and nkula of mpika and Chinsali in Muchinga province and munkonge of Kasama in northern province.

Briefing the press later, Mr. Mwamba described the meeting as successful but could not give further details on the outcome of the discussions.

Mtendere Girl Allegedly Defiled by Neighbor

A ten year old girl of Lusaka’s Mtendere compound has allegedly been defiled by a seventeen year old boy of the same compound.

And parents of the girl want justice to prevail over the matter.

They claim that from time the matter was reported to Mtendere police station, some police officers have not been taking the case seriously.

Fight Against GBV in Southern Province in Uphill Battle

Mazabuka Police commanding Officer, Lizzy Peter Machina says the fight against Gender Based Violence in the district is a non-negotiable matter.

Mrs. Machina was speaking in Mazabuka Southern Province, when Zambia Children New Life Centre Executive Director, Kavwumbu Hakachima in the company of Victim Support Unit National Coordinator, Tresphod Kasale visited her office before holding a GBV sensitization activity in the outskirts of Mazabuka.

UNZA Protests Leave Trail of Destruction

The riot at the University of Zambia-UNZA- has left property worth millions of kwacha burnt to ashes in unclear circumstances.

Some students claim that this was after police threw teargas canister in some hostels.

Students at Mulungushi University, Copperbelt University and UNZA on Friday joined in calling for government to reverse its decision to remove the fuel and maize subsidies.

Over 30 students have since been arrested in connection with the riot.

State Urged To Revise Minimum Wage Following Rise in Commodity Prices

Following an increase in fuel prices on the Zambian market, prices of commodities have shoot up. This is forcing consumers to make calls on government to revise the minimum wage.

But Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda has told consumers to stop speculating about the impact of fuel increment before implementation has been made.

Mr. Shamenda says government does not revise the minimum wage without seeing the impact that any decision made has done on the Zambian people.

Kasonkomona Trial Fails To Take Off

Trial has failed to take off in a case in which human rights activist Paul Konsokomona has been accused of idle and disorderly conduct.

This is because defence lawyers have raised an application to determine the constitutionality of section 178 of the penal code under which Kansokomona has been arrested, charged and prosecuted.

Early last month Kasonkomoma was arrested minutes after appearing on a live MUVI television programme on which he demanded for the recognition of gay rights.

Chanda Survives Punches from UNZA Students

Open Society Foundation Executive Director Sunday Chanda has survived punches from angry University of Zambia-UNZA- students after he supported government’s decision to remove subsidy on mealie meal and other commodities.

Lusaka Woman Admits Dumping Baby in Pit Latrine

In a shocking revelation a 28 year old woman of Lusaka has admitted how she attempted to conceal the birth of her son when she dumped him in a pit latrine.

Sarah Banda of Lusaka’s Bauleni Compound appeared before Lusaka principle resident magistrate AlaidahChulu facing a charge of concealing the birth of a child.

Ms. Banda on 21 April 2013 gave birth to a baby boy and attempted to conceal the birth when she dumped it in a pit latrine and begun pouring gravel in the latrine.

Two Die in House Inferno

Two members of the same family have died, while two others are battling for their lives in the University Teaching Hospital-UTH-after their house caught fire last night.

The deceased are a Twenty Five year old mother identified as Naomi Mbimbi and her five year old daughter of Lusaka’s Msisi compound.It is suspected the fire started from a candle which was left burning.
