Sikatana Dies

Former Agriculture Minister and prominent lawyer Mundia Sikatana has died.

He died at the University Teaching Hospital-UTH after battling with a long illness.

UTH Public Relations Manager, Pauline Mbangweta says Mr. Sikatana was certified dead at exactly 22:15 hrs last night.

In 1980, he and others were detained by first republican president Dr. Kenneth Kaunda’s UNIP regime after they attempted to end the one-party brutality by overthrowing government.

In 2002, Mr. Siktana was appointed as   agriculture minister during which he and his government faced wide scale media condemnation for banning genetically modified maize donations during a famine in 2002.

Mr. Sikatana trained as a lawyer and during the one party rule he was one of the fearless lawyers who championed the cause for justice and the respect of human rights.
