The Zambia National Women’s Lobby (ZNWL) has congratulated Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma for being elected as the new African Union Commission Chairperson at the recent Heads of States and Government meeting in Ethiopia.
Organization chairperson Beauty Phiri says the election of the first woman AU Commission chairperson is a turning point in Africa for participation and representation of women in high decision making positions.
She says this transformation of the continental body will further the cause of women.
Ms Phiri states that Dlamini-Zuma deserves being elected because she is well qualified and experienced after having served in different ministerial positions in South Africa.
She adds that it is now time for a woman to lead the continental body of nations.
Ms. Phiri is optimistic Dlamini-Zuma will work towards the implementation of the 50/50 African Union Protocol on women’s participation in decision making in all the member states, including Zambia.
She is further optimistic Mrs. Zuma will be able to work on many other challenges affecting women on the continent, such as the refugee crisis in the Great Lakes Region and the participation of women in peace negotiations.
