Abortions Conducting NGO Operations Suspended

Northern Province PS, Emmanuel Mwamba has directed the Provincial Medical Officer, Dr. Jelita Chinyonga, to immediately suspend the operations of a non-governmental organization Marie Stopes Zambia International for conducting illegal abortions in Muchinga and Northern Province.
In its official report to Ministry of Health, Marie Stopes International has disclosed that it has been conducting medical abortions in Mbala, Kasama, and Nakonde districts
In January to May 2012, Marie Stopes International Zambia conducted 430 abortions in Nakonde.
In Kasama the organization conducted 30 abortions from January to May 2012.
In Mpika, it conducted 30 abortions between January to May 2012.
Mr. Mwamba states that the organization activities were inimical to the province as they were carrying out abortion activities outside the law.
He also directed the Provincial Police Commissioner, Mary Chikwanda to follow up the matter and ensure that the officials involved are brought to book.
