The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund-UNICEF has bestowed Chief Macha’s Chiefdom in Choma District an Open Defecation Free-ODF status, making it the first chiefdom to be recognized in Africa.

The Status has seen Chief Macha named UNICEF Ambassador for sanitation for his contribution to the success of Community Led Total Sanitation.

Speaking at a colorful ceremony held in Choma on Saturday, UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, Elhadj Assy commended Chief Macha’s efforts of advocating for a clean and healthier environment.

Meanwhile, Chief Macha said he will use his role as ambassador to share with other traditional leaders, ways of implementing Open Defecation Free in their chiefdoms. And Local Government and Housing Minister, Proffesor. Nkandu Luo says government is committed to ensuring that Zambia becomes an open defecation free.
