Deregistration Of SACCORD Received With Disappointments

Category: Politics
09/03/2010
The Deregistration Of The Southern African Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has been received with a lot of disappointments. Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) says it is saddened with the high court judgment pertaining to the deregistration of SACCORD. TIZ Executive Director Goodwell Lungu says in a News statement that the episode to deregister the organization is unfortunate. Mr. Lungu notes that the judgment, if unchallenged on appeal will unfortunately set a bad precedent in terms of individual Zambians enjoying their freedoms of associations and expression. He says the judgment ignored section 13 Cap 3 of the Societies Act which is very specific in protecting and ensuring procedural fairness. TIZ has however concluded that the fight against corruption and good governance has reached the crossroad as the deregistration of SACCORD as well as any other NGO will cripple the efforts and strides towards building a culture of transparency and integrity in Zambia.
