Father Bwalya Maintains Stance On Red Card

The majority of civil society organizations and opposition political parties in the country are fond of criticizing the government of the day but still offer no solutions. A consortium of civil society organizations among them the Citizens Forum, Transparency International Zambia and Change Life Zambia has launched a campaign that seeks to see the ruling government out of power. Change Life Zambia Executive Director Father Frank Bwalya says the red card campaign is advocating against injustices of corruption, high poverty levels and lack of good governance. Featuring on MUVI televisions Matter at hand program on Monday night, Father Bwalya charged that the MMD government has failed the people of Zambia, but was at pains to explain to the viewers what the solution to the current leadership crisis was. Father Bwalya repeated that solutions to the country’s current problems were not easy to come by but emphasized that his organization would continue with its campaign of flashing red cards and whistle blowing every Friday evening. He further argued that there is nothing illegal about the red card campaign because it is not a protest and hence there was no need to get any consent from the police. The controversial Catholic clergyman also revealed that he had stopped praying for the current government and had no hope in reconciling and dialoguing with it because it does not pay attention to needs of the people. He further defended the Catholic Church saying it is not partisan but one that speaks on behalf of citizens who suffer injustice. After the 2008 presidential elections Father Bwalya was forced to resign as Radio Icengelo station manager following his aggressive advocacy campaigns against the electoral system. The move led to his arrest and later the subsequent formation of his organization Change Life Zambia. The Catholic trained prophetic priest is currently on a leave of absence and does not minister at any parish.
