President Michael Sata has appointed Professor Clive Chirwa as Zambia Railways Limited Chief Executive Officer.
Professor Chirwa replaces Knox Karima, who has been retired in national interest.
Mr. Sata stated that the rail line has deteriorated beyond description during the concession to Railway Systems of Zambia-RSZ, which the Government recently terminated.
Mr. Sata stated that it would take a lot of effort to sort out the country’s rail line including the inter-mine rail, which he said is critical to the efficiency of the mining sector.
The President is confident that professor Chirwa’s vast knowledge will help the country to revamp the railway network that will result in a system that will create necessary economic impetus.
He says Government has taken a positive move in this direction by allocating 640 billion Kwacha for the rehabilitation of the rail line.
Meanwhile, President Sata has given Mr. Karima a one month notice in which to facilitate a smooth hand-over and thanked him for the services rendered during his tenure of office.
This is contained in a statement released by State House Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations, George Chellah.
