A consortium of Civil Society Organisations has expressed displeasure with deteriorating standards of press freedom in the country.
In a joint statement read by Non-Governmental Organisations Coordinating Council -NGOCC Chairperson Sarah Longwe, the civil society organisations say the current situation in Zambia does not reflect the multi-party democracy that was fought for in 1991.
Mrs. Longwe says the consortium has since petitioned President Edgar Lungu to immediately act and bring an end to media persecution.
She cited the closure of the Post Newspapers, suspension of licenses for Muvi TV, Komboni and Itezhi-tezhi radio stations and the recent storming of Prime TV as threats to Zambia’s democracy and peace.
The consortium consists of Media Liaison Committee, Press Freedom Committee of the Post, and Media Institute of Southern Africa MISA among others.
Meanwhile, speaking at the same event, Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia Chairperson Helen Mwale has challenged the media in Zambia to unite like the case is with the western media.
