Lusaka Principal Resident Magistrate Greenwell Malumani has been told that a 15-member defense team representing UPND President Hakainde Hichilema in his treason case is being threatened by state Security Agents.
Mr Hichilema’s lawyer Keith Mweemba has threatened to stop defending his client if his safety and that of other advocates continues to be in danger.
Mr Mweemba says he has fled from his house as state security agents are trailing him even at his law firm.
Mr Mweemba says he will soon file a complaint to the Law Association of Zambia-LAZ on the matter.
State counsel Vincent Malambo has equally complained of the intimidating mood in the courtroom as police officers who crowd the courts are now standing at the bar.
The magistrate has since ordered the four police officers to move out of the Court as it is not a practice in the Zambia’s judicial system.
State prosecutors handling other court cases have complained of intimidation by the armed police officers manning the entrants and outlets of the court.
Currently most court sessions have been paralyzed as all parties to the cases are being turned away by armed police officers.
UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema and five others are accused of attempting to overthrow the government of President Edgar Lungu by unlawful means.
